A
yurt*
is
a
round, free-standing home that first originated in the high
plains of Mongolia, southern Russia and northern China. It was
designed by the nomadic herders of these areas. They needed homes
that could withstand the high winds and cold temperatures of their
region. They also needed homes which could move with them as they
looked for greener pastures for their animals.
* Yurt is actually a Russian
word. The Mongolian word is "Ger" (pronounced "GAIR")
Yurtfolk
live
in a yurt manufactured in North America that borrows many of the
ideas of traditional yurts, mixed with some western ideas and a
little modern technology. If you would like to learn more about

Kemery, author of "Yurts; Living in the Round"
(2006) created this website. An interior view of our yurt happens to be
in Kemery's book on page 70 (the picture was taken when it was home to
the family in WA).
